General security recommendations

  • Bogota has a high risk of theft, street assaults, vehicle theft and residential robberies. There has been an increase of theft and street assault due to Venezuelans presence
  • Most of these crimes are opportunistic; they happen in mass transit stations, some tourist areas and close to business locations
  • The use of strong sedatives (scopolamine) to commit crimes has been reported in some bars and clubs. Do not leave your food or drink unattended
  • The rate of violent crime is high; however, they happen particularly in low-income neighborhoods. When this is not the case, they are related to drug trafficking or revenge
  • Business travelers and foreigners should lower their profile, and limit their routine to the areas of business and low-risk areas of the city
  • Terrorist risk remains, although it is low
  • The insecurity perception is increasing
