Executive Protection Topics: The Advance
Advance work might be one of the most important aspects of putting together an executive protection detail. Experts say that the preparation for the job is crucial for the success of the task and may be a process that can take much more time than the actual task.
What is the advance when it comes to Executive Protection (EP)? The advance is a series of tasks that must be carried out by members of the EP team prior to the initiation of the EP detail. When the detail is going to take place in a location that is unknown to the EP team, the first thing to do will be to source a local security services provider. This provider must be a properly established company, with all the necessary licenses to operate under local regulations.
Once the local partner has been chosen, one or two members of the principal’s EP team will travel to the location to initiate the proper advance work.
Upon arrival, the team will visit the local resource’s headquarters and verify all necessary documentation which should include the operation license and gun permits. A weapons, communications equipment and initial vehicle inspection can be carried out at this point and ideally, the EP team will be introduced to their local operators which will be briefed on the task and will join the EP team during the advance work.
Once this initial step has been completed, a routes and venue inspection shall be carried out. All routes to be used by the Principal will be inspected to identify choke points and critical areas. Alternative routes should be determined and thoroughly inspected too at this moment. The airport is generally and ideal point to begin this process. A visit to the FBO will be in order when the Principal is travelling in a corporate aircraft.
At each of the venues, including the hotel at which the Principal will the EP team will conduct a security evaluation. The first and most important step is to establish contact with the security managers of the different venues to make sure there will be full cooperation from them when the EP task is being executed. In this evaluation the drop-off and pick-up spots will be identified. emergency exits, bathrooms and any potential risks should be identified during this process. If there are any specific requirements from the EP team to the venue security managers they should be addressed during this stage.
If there are any specific procedures to be followed during the detail, they should be rehearsed during this time to make sure they are performed flawlessly once the actual task occurs.
If the EP team is satisfied once the different activities have been completed, they will give a green light to the local operator and get ready for the actual task.
